Rizpah, daughter of Aiah and concubine of King Saul, did something almost no one remembers—but it changed a nation. After seven descendants of Saul were executed to atone for a broken oath, Rizpah spread sackcloth on a rock and kept vigil “from the beginning of barley harvest until rain fell from heaven” (2 Samuel 21). By day she drove away the birds; by night she fought off the beasts—refusing to let the dead be shamed. Word reached King David, who gathered the bones of the seven, and of Saul and Jonathan, and buried them with honor. Then God heeded the prayers for the land, and the famine lifted.
