Okay bear with me whilst I type out an essay in this description.

A not so well-known fact about me (on this channel at least) is that I read a lot. I love reading more than anything and I usually read a book a week (some weeks are more succesful than others ;)). I have a list of books I wish I could make edits for but the time and effort it would take to find footage that matches would kind of take away from the joy of editing so I never actually end up doing anything with it. Some books lend itself to cute lil edits such as the Red, White and Royal Blue one I did last week but most of them don't. (You will not be surprised that I am HYPED about the Grishaverse Netflix series because I will finally be able to vid my crow babies).

And then this book series came along. This is hands down the best series I've read this year. If you haven't heard of it and you like fantasy, please don't watch this video and instead buy and read the books:

Honestly, the way this whole world is built is nothing short of masterful. Every word in these books make you feel as though you are right there in the middle of it all. At some points it's so awful that you wanna look away, but that's also (imo) where its strengths lie. The reality of war is not pretty, or good, or enjoyable and the way these books show that is just so!!!!!!! good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just PLEASE read them or listen to the audiobook. (I listened to the audiobooks for about 75% of it and I really enjoyed them).

I could honestly gush about this series for another 3000 words. I've recommended it to everyone and I know (and, as I work in a bookshop, we are also now selling them in our English fantasy section).

Now let me get to these two. I knew they were going to break me and I am terrified of the third book but woooooo booooooyyyyyyy was it fun to be broken. They are SUCH an interesting pair. They could both kill me, which I always appreciate in characters. They go from enemies to friends to not quite lovers to enemies and I just wanna scream forever. These two are only a small part why I love these books BUT unfortunately I don't have the footage to vid all the political intrigue and magic (one day I hope). I was rewatching the Chinese version of Mulan (2009) around the same time I finished TDR and I noticed that the main characters have a lot of similarities to Rin and Nezha and so this video was born. They're not perfect fancasts (I know Rin is darker skinned) but they fit perfectly for this video. I worked on this for the past week, ever since I finished the books, and I am really proud of the way it turned out. Shoutout to Meha (ily) and the Poppy War groupchat for hyping me up. "He loved her and feared her" still has me absolutely screaming and it's been ten days since I finished TDR so I guess I'm never gonna get over them.

(As for the scenes I chose to put in this video, I kind of had to rely on what scenes I could pick from Mulan and parallel to the books. They have many more scenes that made me want to throw my phone across the room but a lot of them involved scenes with the gods so I chose not to use them. If you want to know why I chose specific scenes in specific places let me know because I thought about everything for way too long. It's basically chronological from the moment she sees him again after thinking he's dead.)
