For @ofdurinsfolk, who I always seem to meet halfway in loving the same ships, no matter the genre or medium. This one (again) is for you, Kim!

Watched the first two films for the first time (well, not the first counting snippets I've caught over the years from reruns, but the first time I've sat down and watched both in full, back to back) around New Years and absolutely fell in love with them and the franchise. The perfect blend of camp, horror, historical fiction, sci-fi, and rom-com all blended into one immensely enjoyable viewing experience. AND it's got the late 90's, early 00's feel to boot. What's not to love?

I also really enjoyed how Evy wasn't just the token love interest. Does she get into trouble? Yes. Does Rick rescue her a bit?...Yes...BUT Returns gives her so much to work with and develops her character so nicely. She's evolved past being just a librarian and has become Rick's equal, just as he's become hers. His development is fantastic, too. He goes from this Indiana Jones-esque character that was orphaned and has never had anyone to a devoted husband and loving father who'd do absolutely anything for his family. It's just wonderful, for both of them. You can feel the years that've canonically passed between the two films, and you'd feel it even without the physical presence of their 8? 9? year old son (who I love to bits, the perfect blend of the two of them).

The only thing I wish they'd delved into more was the mythos/parameters of reincarnation. I thought it was really interesting. (Not to mention Rachel as Nefertiri??? HOLY FUCK). I just feel like for such a driving force behind the plot, it wasn't utilized or explored to the full extent it could have been. I guess what I'm really getting at is, I wish they'd just gone all in and made Rick a reincarnated Medjai who had been Nefertiri's personal bodyguard. They kind of just threw in Rick having a Medjai tattoo without it having any real impact on the story, aside from it being suggested that he and Evy were fated. Which...again, go all out! Make them an almost direct foil to Imhotep and Anck-Su-Namun. Would make the *spoiler* scene where Evy saves Rick but Anck-Su-Namun abandons Imhotep more impactful. Plus, then they serve both the princess/bodyguard trope as well as the reincarnation trope. Ideas for a sequel to Returns, perhaps? (No, I don't consider Tomb of the Dragon Emperor canon in case you were wondering.)

I've heard some talk/rumors of there being a possibility for a third one with Brendan and Rachel and I'm ALL here for it! He's said he'd be interested and he's currently free, so...Rachel? PLEASE??? I feel like if Neo and Trinity can die at the end of Matrix Revolutions in 2003 and be resurrected and get their HEA in 2021, this should be a cake walk in comparison! Pardon me while I spend the next however long wishing for it to be a reality. Anyone with me?
