It's the greatest 15 minutes of your week, guaranteed, or your money back.Ford for Thought - Episode 2Dave Hollis2021-07-09 | Today's Ford for Thought was Ford's ask to do an episode on dads, as we shot this just before Father's Day when he didn't have a gift, and offered to have this act as the gift -- a very fair trade. Since he was originally planning to talk about fathers, he asked if he could shoot the episode with Heidi so that I wouldn't hear it until it was published, something that turned out so stinking charming, even if they didn't actually spend that much time talking about fatherhood. So, I hope this makes you smile as much as it did me! I am so grateful that this boy has the heart he does and the ability to articulate all the things he feels. Bless.Ford for Thought - Ep1 - DREAMSDave Hollis2021-06-17 | Welcome to the first episode of Ford for Thought. It’s Tuesday. Yes, Tuesday.
Also, it’s Tea Time and this week we are taking about ALL the healths.
We made it through a second season of Tea Time with Noah and as much as we haven’t yet been nominated by the daytime Emmy folks, on this, our Next 90 Days Challenge week on RESILIENCE, a note to anyone who’s struggling to keep going. Having a hard time getting back up.
Keep going. Get back up.
Our adoption journey took five years. It saw a failed international adoption. A failed foster-to-adopt with two newborns. It took us through all the emotions, broke us, and built us back up. Led us here.
It was impossibly hard and required the active choice of resilience on the days we didn’t feel like we could handle any more.
To quote Robert Frost twice in one day: the woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep.
Your desire didn’t go away because it got hard. You just have some miles to go before you sleep.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but self-care isn’t selfish. Self-care is the only way that you’ll thrive in this quarantine, the only way you can be who you’d hope to be for “them”, is to take care of “you” first.
This week on a very special Tea Time with Noah, not only do we get to talk about how important it is to guard your mind by being intentional about what you consume, we also get to see what happens when Noah is left in a room with a running camera while I get my cardigan. It's like an after-school special, with less dramatics.
Seriously, hear this. If you're following people online that make you feel less hopeful, stop following them. If your circle of friends doesn't celebrate your growth journey, find a new circle. If the news you consume leaves you down, turn it off. If you're looking at this from an online platform that gives you anxiety, delete the app.
Every week when I sit down and record these, I am downloading positivity right to her mainframe. Giving her the messages of hope and belief that I want her to hold as her own. And just like me talking truth into the mind of a two year old, the media and voices that you surround yourself with are doing one of two things: they're either filling you with hope and belief, or leaving you feeling afraid and unsure.

There is a weird balance between what we think we do on our own and what we do because it’s been programmed into us by forces outside ourselves. Those outside forces are particularly strong from our family of origin, be it functional or dysfunctional, present or absent, good or bad.

We believe we have limitations for a whole host of reasons we’ll get to in a second, but when we believe these lies about what’s possible, we rob ourselves. And, if we aren’t aware of them, we’ll never be able to fully get out of our own way. When we examine what it is we believe and why we believe it, the yield is transformational. It has been for me, and it will be for you as well.

Rachel and I are building a company now based on the idea that we’re better in community together. That through community, we can grow into fuller, more complete versions of ourselves. The first step to doing this is acknowledging that we don’t know what you’ve been through. We don’t understand what it is like walking in your shoes. We don’t know how your life experience impacts your day-to-day, but we feel certain that the only way we’ll get a little closer to understanding it is doing life together.

This chapter isn’t about working or not, earning more or less. This is about the logic traps we fall into about our val- ues in a relationship. The kind of contingencies we put on why they’re with us in the first place. How those assumptions are tested when life changes, expectedly or unexpectedly.

Openness to the necessity of change in business is seen as a core value. Openness to the necessity of change in a relationship, though, was something I took as an indictment of me. When presented with the need for change, I saw it as an implication that I was in some way failing to live up to my end of the bargain. It felt personal in a way the business example didn’t.

What I did not fully appreciate at the time was how seriously this single event would imprint on how I approached relation- ships from that day forward. My experience now had a new set of evidence: partners cheat because there was something wrong with me, and there was something better in someone else.

When was the last time you asked what the outcome of the interaction in front of you might be? When you’re a therm- ometer, just phoning it in and letting things happen, sure, you may appear as you hope to every now and then—in the same way a broken clock is right twice a day. But that won’t get you very far. If you don’t want to only be a good parent when the conditions are right, or only be a great boss when the situation affords it easily, take control of how you set the temperature you need to get the outcome you’re looking for.

Whether it’s me personally, my support of my wife, or my parenting my kids, many times what I need most is to not get what I want. Growing through those difficult seasons allows us to come out stronger, more mature, more confident in our ability to handle whatever comes next.

It’s been said that at the end of your life you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the things that you did do. I’ve come around to believe that to be true. John Shedd put it another way: “A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”2 I resonate so much with this that it’s a tattoo I now wear on my right forearm. It acts as a reminder to me and my kids to always be testing the choppy waters outside our comfort zone—where growth shows up.
