Thanks to master magnet builders Dimitri Tishchenko and Edo Timmermans for their recent videos that gave me this idea of using 9-triangle octahedron units (of 72 spheres each) to construct rhombic dodecahedrons. This unit makes the construction relatively easy. It also allows multiple rhombic dodecahedrons to join properly at each face to form a mega-tessellation, but you would need a huge amount of magnets, 50 units or 3600 per r.d. The star shaped construction at the end is a rhombic dodecahedron with all 12 faces stellated, and uses 110 units of 72 balls each (7920 total)
