Since its emergence as a cultural force four decades ago, punk has become an important vehicle for giving individuals and communities resources for resistance and rebellion in today’s global capitalist world. Based on fieldwork from around the world, Professor Dunn explores the ways in which individuals have constructed local punk scenes, from Northern Ireland during the Troubles to the streets of Myanmar today, that have been both direct and discrete spaces for political resistance in everyday life.
Biography
Kevin C Dunn is the Donald R. Harter ’39 Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, where he currently serves as the director of the International Relations Program. His publications include Global Punk: Resistance and Rebellion in Everyday Life (2016), as well as the textbook Inside African Politics (with Pierre Englebert, 2013 and 2019), Undertaking Discourse Analysis (with Iver Neumann, 2016), and The Politics of Origin in Africa (with Morten Bøås, 2013), and numerous others. He is a regular contributor to Razorcake magazine and active in various forms of independent cultural production. His debut MG/YA novel, Vicious is my Middle Name (Regal House) will be published in Fall 2022.
