Released towards the end of 1976, Queen's fifth album saw them taking their music to further heights of grandiosity while also smoothing away some of their more bizarre art-rock quirks. The result was a record that cemented their stateside success but gave little clue as to where their music would be heading the following year as punk and new wave rose to ascendancy. Loved by some, despised by others, 'A Day at the Races' was perhaps the last gasp of the old 'conceptual' Queen and contained, in Freddie's immortal 'Somebody to Love', at least one of their greatest ever songs.
