Most of the major works in the history of political philosophy have been written by white men. Those men often held explicitly racist views about the proper place of black, indigenous and people of color in society. Far too often when their ideas are presented today they are whitewashed of their racism. But their bigotry impacted the way they thought about the nature of rights, property, freedom and other important political concepts.
Charles Mills draws our attention to this racism by making it explicit in the places where it was only implicit, and showing how that racism impacted their thinking.
