8x42 POSP scopes make for a good match to SVD, PSL and NDM rifles that are intended for really pushing the limits of both the weapon platform and the cartridge at extended range. 8x42 scopes offer enough magnification for use at extended ranges without sacrificing much low light performance and field of view.
Similarly important is the "D" option. "D" in this case stands for "Diopter" and means that the eyepiece has adjustable focus and can be tweaked to better match the shooter's eye. For shooters who have a hard time bringing the reticle of other POSP scopes into focus, the "D" model is worth looking at.
These scopes have multi-coated lenses filled with nitrogen to prevent fogging and a red illuminated reticle, that uses inverted chevrons to provide aiming points for 100, 200, 300, 400, or, 900, 1000, 1100 & 1200 meters, depending on the model. The range calibrations are for both the AK 7.62x39 and SVD 7.62x54r which are measured in equal amounts of Minute of angle (MOA), they can be used effectively with any caliber of weapon, and many people have said it really shines with the 168 grain HPBT.
The 42mm objective lens allows significantly more light into the scope over the standard 24mm objective in the PSO-1 scope, which allows it to be used in slightly darker conditions.
The old scopes typically had a grey scratch-resistant coating, but newer scopes all have the flat black scratch-resistant coating, and this is some tough stuff. I have yet to chip any of this coating off any of my scopes, with the oldest scope being a decade old.
If you have an AK with a scope mount, then you really should buy a POSP 8x42 or better scope, if you have a PSL with an older and lower magnification scope, this makes for a great upgrade. For My PSL I actually mounted the 1P21 Zoom Scope (SVD scope), and I love the scope, but hate the price, and frankly the POSP can do just as good as my expensive Russian scope.
