Track 5 'Sufi Dialogue' by Soliman Gamil, CD Two from the double CD set compilation Reves D'Oasis Desert Blues 2 released on the Network label in 2002. Distributed by Harmonia Mundi.
Soliman Gami (1924-1995) lived and worked as a musicologist in Cairo, and his music for film and theatre won international awards. He regarded Egypt as the cradle of musical civilisation. In his instrumental piece 'Sufi Dialogue' he creates a dialogue between the oud lute and the kanoun, a zither believed to have originated in the age of the Pharaos.
“Bahr bela ma”, ocean without water, was the name by which Arab camel drivers knew the Sahara, the world's largest desert. They travelled that ocean by camel, the ships of the desert, or as the French call their caravans, le train de sable.
