"Northanger Abbey is supposed to be a parody and comentary on the gothic novels of the day. I think I remember from Dr. Lucy Worsley's series on the romance novel and how it shaped society, women's rights, and how we view love and all that that the gothic novel was blamed for young women not listening to their parents and getting married too soon which is the reason for the line in the book."

“I tend to be very disappointed with the adaptations. They are rarely faithful to the novels. I try to stay away from them. Now there is Persuasion adaptation and just seeing the thriller put me off 😂
The only exception is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. The adaptation (with Richard Armitage) is so great.

I have a tendency to like movie/tv adaptations even the bad ones. I have favorites, but I just have a soft spot for Austen adaptations.”
