In our ongoing series Ones to Watch, we bring you Toronto-via-Calgary indie folk outfit Reuben and the Dark. We originally bumped into the Canadian band a couple years ago at SXSW when they performed two acoustic tunes off their current album Funeral Sky for our Stripped Down sessions ([watch here](youtu.be/-TtkfHi7_S8)). To be honest, I never heard of Reuben and the Dark until I was sifting through all the media requests I got as I was planning on what to shoot at SXSW, when I came across a pitch sent by the [Arts & Crafts](arts-crafts.ca/) label. I’ve always been a huge fan of everything the label puts out, so I decided to give the band a quick listen to see if they would fit in with our SXSW shoot, Stripped Down by the River. Well, as it turns out, this album had me enthralled the minute the second chorus kicked in on the song “Bow and Arrow.” I was hooked. I couldn’t stop listening. When I finally hit the final track “Can’t See the Light,” I did what every nerdy, uber fan does -- I played the whole thing again. I couldn’t help but think, “Who knows what these guys will sound like, playing acoustic by a river, but I need to take a chance on them!” Let me tell you, I certainly wasn’t disappointed. That day, down on the banks of the Colorado River, they didn’t disappoint. I was floored -- I seriously had goosebumps (which sometimes makes it hard to hold the camera steady). So when I heard the band was touring through San Francisco, I had to invite them into the studio to lay down some tracks for our Ones to Watch series because, well, everyone needs to hear this band. When I met up with them, I asked them if they would choose a song to cover and they picked “One Grain of Sand” by folk legend Pete Seeger. Watch and listen to their beautiful, swelling rendition of this song that Seeger wrote for his young daughter when he would put her down to sleep at night. -- _Olivia Parriott_
