William Isebaiddu is leading a team of conservationists in Uganda to tackle the threats facing Singida tilapia fish and to halt their decline. The breeding programme in the lake ensures that they can increase fish numbers quickly, using wild parent for captive breeding and releasing offspring back into the wild.
William and his team, from wildlife organisation Hope for Nature, have worked very hard to restore the fortunes of Singida tilapia fish, which were historically harvested in the lake. Over fishing, illegal fishing practices, predation by the larger, invasive Nile perch, pollution and environmental degradation have all played in part in the decline of Singida.
Hope for Nature will restock the conservation zones within the lake with 40,000 fingerlings over the course of two years, in collaboration with Mukono district local government and PTES. Watch as William and the team release 5000 fingerlings (baby fish) into the wild!
