RetroTech Chris | RetroTutorial: DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups: Wireless Network! @RetroTechChris | Uploaded June 2020 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Join me as I take you through how I set up my Compaq LTE 5380 with DOS 6.22, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Wireless networking. See below in the description for a list of steps to set up wireless networking using the Cisco Aironet 350 on your portable retro PC!
Precondition: Set firmware on card to use this version: github.com/cml37/dos-utils/blob/master/config/resources/PC350v42523.exe
* I found this easiest to do using Windows 95. I used the drivers and the ACU utility included in this file: github.com/cml37/dos-utils/blob/master/config/resources/350-Windows-95-Bundle-2.1.exe
* One you run the above installer which "unzips" the files, it's best to "copy" the drivers to a short path like C:\c to make the installation easier. I don't know why Cisco used such long paths, Win95 driver management has trouble finding them.
1) Buy yourself a Cisco Aironet 350 (and possibly a router that supports the older WEP protocol if yours doesn't)
a) I set up my WEP router to be an access point on my network, configured its own ssid, and set up security to 128 bit WEP
2) Put the Cisco Aironet 350 into the BOTTOM PCMCIA slot
3) Get Drivers from here: github.com/cml37/dos-utils/blob/master/config/resources/air350.zip
4) Add card in WFW 3.11 (ndis) - Be sure to set an SSID by clicking on the card and then Settings, then find the SSID setting
5) Now reboot, and don't load ANY DRIVERS AT ALL (in DOS 6.22, this would mean holding down the "SHIFT" key when "Starting MS-DOS..." appears)
6) Navigate to your driver installation directory and type cscpkt 0x80
a) Pay close attention to the IRQ and I/O address assigned as a part of the driver load
7) Use wepdos to set key using your IRQ, I/O address, and desired WEP key: wepdos -365 -i11 -p140 -tx1 deadbeefdeadbeefdeadbeefde
a) my IRQ was 11, my I/O address was 140, my WEP key was 26 hex characters
8) Now go modify C:\windows\protocol.ini and add AuthType=WEPOPEN under the [CSCNDIS2] section of the file
9) Reboot and load network via C:\windows\net start
10) Start WFW 3.11 and you will be on the network!!
