Retronica is a subgenre of electronic music we've been toying with for a long time. I've been working on this track off-and-on since 2015.
Basically it’s inspired by the broad spectrum of old-school electronic music. Analog synth from the ‘60s and ‘70s, Mellotron, video game music, cheesy background music from old cartoons, toy keyboards from the ‘80s, anything that isn’t heard at a rave club really.
It isn’t exactly bitpop, or it shouldn’t be. It's not strictly chiptune either, and it's just barely synthwave. The idea is that it’s more focused on mood and atmosphere rather than whether or not you can dance to it. Happy bouncy silly songs like this one, ballads, creepy horror, whatever you can say with music, honestly.
