How can we rethink business for sustainability as we open up our societies again after the coronavirus lockdown? How do we promote a shift to sustainable business and avoid falling back on 'business as usual' as we seek to achieve sustainable development goals?
Law professor Beate Sjåfjell, at the University of Oslo, proposes to apply a stringent set of sustainable corporate law and governance principles.
Since 2016, Beate Sjåfjell has led the interdisciplinary Horizon 2020 research project, Sustainable Market Actors for Responsible Trade (SMART). Based on SMART Research, Professor Sjåfjell and her team propose several concrete actions for European policymakers as a part of a legislative reform to promote sustainable business. Specifically, they recommend that EU company law is changed so that:
· the purpose of any business is to create sustainable way within planetary boundaries,
· the duty of the board is redefined to support this purpose, including sustainable due diligence across global value chains, and
· the integration of sustainability into business is verified by external experts, and sustainability reporting is audited.
In this webinar Professor Sjåfjell will present the findings of this research and outline the concrete steps to contribute to ensuring sustainable business in the decades to come.
