In this first video of the Nordmende Galaxy Mesa 9000 restoration, I dive into a full first-look at a radio that was clearly designed to take on the legendary Grundig Satellit 2100. Nordmende packed the Galaxy Mesa with features—excellent FM performance, FM presets, commercial shortwave drum tuning, and even a built-in BFO for SSB reception.
But while it certainly tried to compete on features, the build quality doesn’t quite reach Grundig’s level… at least in my opinion. Still, this set has plenty going for it, and it’s a fascinating piece of engineering history.
In this video I:
• Do a full walkthrough of the exterior and controls
• Explore the feature set and discuss Nordmende’s design choices
• Inspect the internals and see what condition it’s in
• Notice a few things that need attention right away
• Begin the usual restoration sequence: power supply → audio stage
• Perform initial testing to see what we’re dealing with
This one might surprise us—or fight us—but that’s half the fun. Join me for the start of the journey as I bring this feature-rich radio back to life and prepare it for the next restoration stages.
