This Restoration project issue is dedicated to the city of Sumy, which has been enduring enemy shelling for over two years. Watch this video to learn how the city, located 30 km from the Ukrainian-Russian border, prioritizes security, rebuilding, and development.
Being so close to the border with Russia has inevitably impacted Sumy: local authorities are primarily focused on protecting the city and constructing shelters, while activists largely drive niche development initiatives. Despite the challenges, the community is making long-term plans and implementing urgent projects. In this video, we will speak with the director of the hospital, which has been damaged multiple times by Russian shelling but has recovered and continues to operate. We’ll also talk to an architect who designs public spaces using biodegradable building materials made from industrial hemp, and we’ll interview the co-founder of the Sumy media outlet Cukr about the local information landscape and the cultural needs of the townspeople.
