After the Fourth Crusade, the crusaders sacked Constantinople, causing the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. The crusaders formed the Latin Empire to replace the Byzantines. The Empire of Nicaea, Trebizond, and the Despotate of Epirus, all originated from the Byzantine Empire. But the Empire of Nicaea would be the one to recreate the Byzantine Empire.
