I think I've come up with a way to do the side-by-side gasses experiment. But before we do, I want to make extra sure I've completely understood your ideas about Relative Density. Let's make a formal hypothesis and then we can design some experiments and test it out!
Here's the full text of the hypothesis for reference:
1) Any object moves towards the location within the medium that matches its density.
a) Dense objects move towards where the medium is denser.
b) Less-dense objects move towards where the medium is less-dense.
c) Objects will come to rest where their density matches that of the medium.
2) The direction of force comes from the direction of the density gradient in the medium.
a) If the air is denser below than above, a rock sinks while a helium balloon rises.
3) The density of the entire object is what counts – not the density of the materials.
a) A helium balloon rises to the level of the density of the complete helium balloon – not the density of the latex.
4) The object MUST be in contact with the medium for this effect to occur.
a) A basketball in a submarine falls to the floor even though there is water above the submarine.
And "The Big Question"
Is the density gradient the cause or the effect?
The Relative Density Hypothesis suggests the density gradient CAUSES objects to move to find equilibrium within the medium.
The Null Hypothesis suggests the density gradient is the RESULT of objects moving in accordance to some other influence.
