Developed by Insomniac, Resistance: Fall of Man is a first-person shooter and exclusive to the PS3. A launch title and highly regarded at the time of its release. Modern reviews are a bit harsh on the game, most claim it didn't age well. I would argue the opposite.

The game runs at a solid 30fps and while that may seem inconsequential, remember that this is a launch title and the frame rate is stable throughout the course of the campaign. Beyond a solid framerate, the game has customizable controls which allow it to play in a somewhat modern style. The gunplay is fast, the gameplay is fun. The campaign is meaty and it's a proper challenge. Watch any modern review and the biggest complaint is how difficult the game is. This is true, as Insomniac was known for challenging games. The visuals are top shelf for being a PS3 launch title and they still hold up in 2026. If you were there at the time, you remember how rough the PS3's launch was and how much worse the vast majority of their games looked compared to the Xbox 360. Resistance: Fall of Man showcased (at the time) the power of the PS3. Resistance: FOM also featured a robust online mode that was quite popular, the servers were shutdown in 2014. The game also has local-campaign coop. The online mode ran in 60fps.

I personally love this game, I have only played through it in its entirety a single time, but I've revisited 50% of the campaign a few times over the years and I always enjoy myself. I play on Easy these days but I've noticed that crouching and taking cover makes the challenge much more manageable. That may seem obvious but it's very easy to approach this title as a run and gun, which you shouldn't do because the game will punish you quickly. There are multiple difficulty options as well, Easy, Medium, Hard, and 'Superhuman' is unlocked after completing the game on Hard. The game also has a plethora of unlockables that are earned through completing in-game challenges. Insomniac was known for this via Ratchet & Clank on PS2 and this game is similar in that regard and it also works as a pseudo-Trophy system. The PS3 didn't have trophies for it's first few years and most games included their own Trophy system of sorts.

Resistance would go on to receive two mainline entries from Insomniac, Resistance 2 & Resistance 3, both exclusive to the PS3. Resistance: Retribution, developed by Bend, would release as a PSP exclusive and is a phenomenal third-person cover shooter. It takes place in France, between Resistance 1 and 2. Resistance: Burning Skies would later release as a Vita exclusive and was developed by Nihilistic Software.

These days, you can cloud stream Resistance 3 on PS+ Premium, and Retribution is also available via PS+ Premium in native fashion, no cloud streaming required.

Enjoy!
