Ordinarily, I wouldn't be keen on posting without context or buildup a late-game sequence from a game I haven't uploaded any part of other than the preceding clipshow mashup of a bunch of technical issues therein, but I suppose it's also unlikely that anyone deeply concerned with the gripping narrative heights of the dramatic masterpiece that is... resident... evil... ... ... six.

I also wasn't sure I'd actually post this video at all, but like so many other things, the ultimate motivating factor actually ended up being pure, unbridled rage at technical issues.

No, in this case, this game is actually blameless.

Listen, it's ancient, and it's not the most beautiful sight you've ever beheld, but in this case... it was YouTube compressing it to hell in a way that even I, who am willing to overlook a lot of visual jank... like the compromises required to make Monster Hunter Wilds run on reasonable hardware. But this was a bridge too far.

At first I just rolled my eyes when I started noticing certain partnered channels having a "1080p Premium" option on their videos... but it feels like in this case, YouTube has fundamentally broken something in order to create a "solution" to itself... then charge people for it. But having had a moment where it very clearly affected my own upload to such a degree really opened my eyes to it, and I'm kinda disgusted by this practice on a whole new level.

It's all the more absurd when the "fix" from my perspective without incurring any of that was even dumber than I've already been reduced to resorting to. You see, back when YouTube started offering 60fps video playback, it only did so at videos that were 720p and above, so if I wanted that on very old game footage, I'd have to artificially upscale it (as non-detrimentally as possible) to meet this standard.

The "solution" in this new case is very similar, but it relies on the fact that video uploaded at 1440p or higher will make use of the vp9 codec encoding on the backend instead of avc1. (If you're ever curious, right click the player and check the "stats for nerds" option.) This will propagate down and make the same 1080p video look a lot nicer even at 1080p (non-Premium!) just because it was encoded differently from the original upload where I did not do such a thing.

If you're truly interested in the evils that motivated me to this drastic measure, I can show you the original uploaded version of the very same video here:

And here I just had a stupid thought while doing silly button prompts for a vaguely "interactive" alternative to a straight up cutscene moment.

With silly noises.

... ... ...now I get to have the tremendous existential dread of "do I actually NEED to artificially upscale every upload to 1440p JUST to avoid nonsensical degrees of potentially devastating reduction in visual clarity?
