An all-paws-on-deck effort is taking place behind the scenes at the Zoo Hospital. We received a call alerting us that an orphaned North American river otter pup was taken in by rangers at a Maryland State Park and needed immediate care. The approximately 40-day-old pup was transported to the Zoo hospital for assessment.
Over the last few weeks, the healthy female pup has been getting around-the-clock care, including midnight feedings, daily vet checks, and otter-appropriate enrichment. She's been deemed non-releasable by rehab professionals and will continue to be cared for here until she a permanently placed at another facility at the recommendation of the North American river otter Species Survival Plan.
