This is somewhat of a vent animation but more so an exploration of how I created one of my more recent, albeit well known characters. Radiance. This vindictive secretary bird that so many people have come to adore was once a vent character made to fictionalize the envy, lost friendship, and sense of inferiority associated with an ex friend of mine. I went on plenty of disjointed rants about this person on instagram so there’s no use beating a dead horse and I’m aware that it’s no one’s business except my own. Plus the person in question didn’t do anything bad besides having a messy falling out with me. My emotions were all over the place but they were indeed hurt. But it’s been about a year since it happened and now is as good a time as ever to move on.
With that out of the way I’ve developed a morbid fascination with NIN’s album The Downward Spiral. It’s frankly the best example of disturbing the comforted and comforting the disturbed. I am the disturbed in this situation. Most people know the erotically charged song “Closer” but tbh the raunchiest song on TDS by far is “Big Man With A Gun” the gun in question referring to the protagonist’s phallus.
It’s disturbing, difficult to listen to at times and DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS!!!
Reptile is my favorite song from the album. The rhythmic samples of machinery in the background inspired the depiction of my sona Vad as a stationary mech hoisted up by wires. Radiance is the thing the machine fabricated, created from Vad’s anger and need for revenge but ultimately created in his own image. I also incorporated random motifs associated with TDS. Flies, dirty grunge overlays, and themes of self destruction.
