The 2012 introduction of CRISPR technology, which allows scientists to rewrite genomes with ease and precision, has sparked an international race to apply it to medicine, agriculture, and basic scientific research. In a session at the 10th World Conference of Science Journalists in San Francisco in October 2017, an international group of leading science journalists discussed the experience of reporting on genome editing. The panelists described the environment in their own countries, touching on research, government regulation, public opinion, and the ways that economic, religious, historical, and cultural factors influence media coverage.
