Mark Fixes Stuff | Removing Electrolytic Surface Mount Capacitors with Gentle Cutting @MarkFixesStuff | Uploaded August 2017 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
Join me as we explore an easy way to remove old SMD type capacitors, with minimum thermal shock to the board. It involves snipping through the soft aluminium of the capacitor can, revealing the metal legs (the cathode and anode) which can then be desoldered more readily.
I know it's better to use hot air and tweezers, and I have these here too, but this video is there to help people who don't have access to those tools and maybe only need to do one or two capacitors. It is a million times better than twisting capacitors off of the board!
PLEASE NOTE - THIS METHOD MUST BE DONE VERY GENTLY!!!
