The scientific cloud desktop deployed at ICTP and
accessible by all is a result of the post-doc research work of Dr.
Mary-Jane Sule under the supervision of Dr. Ivan Girotto from the
Information and Communication Technology Unit. The product aids both
remote and online scientific teaching, research and
learning, thereby providing equal and quality education irrespective of
one’s geographical location and background.
This ICTP solution is a customised stack of software tailored for
scientific work. Users are provided a Graphical User
Interface (GUI) Cloud Desktop with a USB-over-IP capability that allows
them to attach and program external boards. It is further linked to an
HPC cluster for additional processing power where needed. It has been used
for remote training in Condensed Matter Physics, Earth System Physics,
FPGA Scientific Instrumentation and by other external educational partner
institutions such as ICTP’s Physics Without Frontiers, University of Addis
Ababa, and EAIFR Rwanda.
