We take a moment today to remember one of the all-time greats of television, Lucille Ball. If there was a Mount Rushmore on a mountain somewhere in her home state of New York, she would be enshrined atop that mountain, alongside Bob Hope, Jackie Gleeson and Lucy's husband Desi Arnaz, as key performers and producers who helped shape the television landscape in the 1950's and impacted television and its path in the American way of life for the rest of the century.

This video clip is from a performance that Lucille gave on The Dean Martin Variety Show back in 1966, performing alongside a chorus line and 'backing up' Dean Martin and Kate Smith's duet. A very funny skit and performance by all three. One of our favorite television skits of all-time for we fans here at Television Vanguard. Lucy still had the 'dancer's body' years after she had started her stage career back in the 1930s.

Back at Lucy's hometown of Jamestown, New York, for more than thirty years, a celebration takes place each year on August 6th to celebrate and remember the great talent and foresight of the town's legendary native daughter. The birthday event has grown over the years to a Comedy Festival, and has become a summertime destination event for locals as well as travelers to the area and fans from around the country wanting to be a part of the celebration and festival. The town and festival includes the year-round Lucy-Desi museum and the larger National Comedy Center that celebrates all comedians and provides a stand-up comedy stage and show for-and-coming upcoming comedians. Lucy wanted a place created that didn't just pay tribute to her, her family and her work, but also as a place where people could go to hone their craft, learn about comedy and television history, and enjoy their day. Well done Ms. Ball.

Rest in peace Lucy (1911 to 1989)... and happy birthday to you and your amazing life.
