Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669) is one of the most famous artists in the history of western art. His work is represented in every major museum collection in the world and is enormously popular.

Britain has played a central role in the appreciation of Rembrandt’s work, and this was the focus of our exhibition Rembrandt | Britain’s Discovery of the Master, which was on at the Scottish National Gallery until 14 October 2018.

In this film, discover ten interesting facts about Rembrandt and his life and work that you might not know.

Some of the images are part of the exhibition, and for others we are grateful to:

National Gallery of Ireland
National Gallery of Art, Washington
The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
