Religious Hypocrisy (Isaiah 58) Reflective sermon by Pastor JD Howell
What does it mean to truly worship God, and how can we tell if our religion is real or just an outward show? In this searching message from Isaiah 58, Pastor JD Howell exposes the danger of religious hypocrisy and calls us to examine whether our spiritual activity is genuinely for God or simply for ourselves. The people of Israel looked faithful on the outside. They fasted, sought God daily, and delighted in religious practices. Yet beneath the surface, something was deeply wrong, and God saw it clearly.
Isaiah 58 reveals that God is not impressed with empty religion. The people fasted, but they did it for their own pleasure. They appeared spiritual in public, but privately they were harsh, self-centered, and even oppressive. God declares that true worship is not about outward performance, but inward devotion that produces freedom from sin and compassion toward others. As the Scripture says, “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6). When God is truly at the center, our lives will reflect His heart, not just His name.
This message challenges us to ask a simple but piercing question: are we doing what we do for God, or for ourselves? It is possible to read your Bible, attend church, sing songs, and even serve others, yet still be driven by pride or self-interest. True Christianity is not about pretending to be perfect, but about humbly walking with God and allowing Him to change us from the inside out. As we are reminded in the New Testament, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27). Genuine faith will always result in both personal holiness and love for others.
