Join us on a spectacular hike to Mount Gingilos on Crete, starting high above the famous Samaria Gorge at the Omalos Plateau. Step into our footsteps and experience the changing landscapes, rugged rock formations and incredible summit views of one of our favorite mountain hikes on the island.
The trail begins at the Samaria Gorge parking area, but instead of heading down into the gorge, we climb into the mountains above Omalos. What starts as a peaceful Mediterranean hiking trail soon leads through increasingly dramatic terrain: colorful vegetation, natural rock arches, enormous formations, boulder fields and finally the rocky ascent toward the summit of Mount Gingilos.
One of the things we loved most about this hike was just how diverse it felt.
The higher we climbed, the wider the landscape opened up. From the upper slopes and summit, you can look down onto the Omalos Plateau, across the surrounding mountains and toward the White Mountains, over parts of Samaria Gorge and all the way to the distant sea. It almost feels like standing on a mountain placed on top of another mountain.
And then, of course, you have to make your way back down. As the sun slowly disappeared, clouds moved through the mountains and the landscape changed once again, giving us a beautiful ending to the hike.
🥾 Tour Facts: Mount Gingilos Hike
- Start: Samaria Gorge Parking Lot / Omalos Plateau
- Distance: approx. 9.1 km
- Elevation gain: approx. 860 m
- Summit: 2080 m above sea level
- Route: Out & back
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Hiked in: October
Most of the route is regular mountain hiking, but the final approach to the summit includes some scrambling over rocky terrain. Sure-footedness and appropriate mountain experience are therefore important.
Mount Gingilos is also sometimes called or spelled Mount Gigilos.

The Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho hike PR7 on Madeira Island is a circular route that begins near the Igreja da Lombada da Ponta do Sol. The hike starts with a short walk along Levada Nova and through a small village until you reach the waterfall. The views of the valley, as well as the diverse plant life and towering rock formations, make for a unique and enchanting hiking experience. After passing through a 200-meter tunnel, the trail ends at the Levada Nova waterfall, a magnificent sight that should not be missed. From there, you will continue on the Levada Nova until you reach a staircase leading down to the Levada do Moinho. The hike back along the Levada do Moinho is equally enjoyable, with similar surroundings and scenic views. The hike is mostly safe, but hikers should still be careful while traversing along the Levadas.

Die Wanderung auf die Hochplatte ist eine beliebte und unverwechselbare Wanderung in den Ammergauer Alpen. Auf 2082 Metern Höhe bietet der Gipfel eine brillante Aussicht auf die umliegenden Berge. Besonders markant ist der Gipfel und seine Umgebung mit ihrer Gras- und Felslandschaft. Ein weiteres Highlight der Wanderung ist das Hochplatte-Fensterl, eine markante Öffnung im Grat, die den Wanderern eine einzigartige Aussicht bietet. Auch die Wanderung selbst ist charakteristisch und beinhaltet eine unglaublich schöbe Gratwanderung.

Kurze Routenbeschreibung der Hochplatte-Wanderung:
Das Alpenhotel Ammerwald ist der Ausgangspunkt für den Ausflug auf die Hochplatte. Nach einem ersten Abschnitt an der Straße, kommst du bald schon zu einem Flussbett, dem du folgst. Du begegnest einem Wasserfall und überquerst das Flussbett an einer niedrigen Stelle. Danach wanderst du nach oben in Serpentinen durchs Grüne. Schon bald hast du die Hochplatte voraus. Die Landschaft verändert sich auf deiner Hochplatte-Wanderung nach und nach. Du kommst langsam aus dem noch bewaldeten Gebiet in eines, das sich durch steinerne und gräserne Umgebung auszeichnet. Dein Weg schlängelt sich in Serpentinen zwischen Felsmassiven hindurch. Am Ende dieses Aufstiegs wartet der Hochplattengrad auf dich. Bergblumen, gigantische Felsen und eine detailreiche Steinlandschaft sind es, was diesen Grad zu etwas Besonderem machen. Wenn du das Gipfelkreuz erreichst, kannst du ein beeindruckendes 360°-Panorama der Ammergauer Alpen, verschiedener Seen und Täler sehen. Dann steigst du langsam ab. Der weitere Abstieg, der bald schon serpentinenartig immer weiter nach unten führt, bringt dich wieder zum Flussbett zurück, an dem du auch zu Beginn deiner Wanderung warst. Letztlich kommst du auch wieder an der Straße an, die zurück zum Parkplatz führt.
