Amtrak is modernizing the East River Tunnel; it’s one of the most important rail corridors in New York City. This modernization project is transforming Line 2 into a safer, more reliable, and state-of-the-art tunnel that will support Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, and future Metro-North service.
As of September 2025, the project is already one-quarter complete.

This phase includes:
• Removing old track and ballast and installing temporary systems
• Bench wall demolition, now one-third complete
• Major weekend outages to deliver critical upgrades at Penn Station and tunnel portals
• Installation of new signal and power infrastructure

Once finished in 2026, riders will experience improved safety, better reliability, and modern infrastructure designed to last for the next 100 years.
