The original oxen beneath the Salt Lake Temple baptismal font, each weighing 2,200 pounds, are being carefully refurbished as part of the temple’s renovation.

The oxen that support temple fonts symbolize the tribes of Israel and the strength upon which God’s work rests.

Their preservation makes way for two baptismal fonts when the temple reopens. The east font holds the original cast-iron oxen. The west font features new fiberglass oxen, which have already been installed.

All are invited to see the refurbished oxen in person at the Salt Lake Temple Celebration, taking place April—October 2027!
