In Greenfield Village, the Mattox Family Home tells the story of an African American family living in rural Georgia. Many visitors remember the home’s newspaper-covered walls, which provide insulation and are characteristic of Southern clapboard homes of the era.

Recently, The Henry Ford shifted our date of interpretation for the Mattox Family Home from the early 1930s to 1927 — an opportunity for new, rich storytelling. For years, we have papered the home’s walls in reproductions of a 1933 issue of the Savannah Morning News in our collection.

In this video, learn how we worked with the Georgia Newspaper Project in our search for historical newspapers to suit our new date of interpretation. We identified and reproduced newspapers that would have been available to the Mattoxes in Bryan County, Georgia, during the mid-1920s.
