Today, I’m unboxing and walking through Reflective Arcana Tarot, One Arcana, Two Worlds, a fascinating project from MeMeng Studio, YingYai Art & Illustration and LoongTin Reader, created with the permission of Atahan, the artist behind Slightly Strange Tarot and The Daydream Tarot.
What makes this project so special is that we have two decks built around the same underlying arcana, but presented in two completely different visual worlds.
The Two-Shade Edition takes the original line illustrations and presents them in a beautifully restrained black-and-white treatment, allowing the structure, line work and details of the artwork to really stand out.
Alongside it is the Full-Shade Edition, which takes those original illustrations and transforms them into a completely new, fully coloured interpretation. The imagery is recognisable between the two, but the introduction of colour changes the atmosphere and gives the cards an entirely different personality.
In this video I’ll be unboxing both decks and then going through them side-by-side, comparing the artwork and seeing how the same cards can feel so different when viewed through these two contrasting approaches.
For me, this is what makes One Arcana, Two Worlds such an interesting concept. These decks have a wonderful individuality of their own, yet they clearly belong together. One allows the artwork to speak through shadow and line, while the other opens that same imagery into a world of colour.
