Watching the National Emergency Briefing film this evening confirmed something I've long believed: this crisis is not a problem for future generations. It's already here. The film is tough, and if anything, its sections on economics and energy were, in my professional judgment, slightly too optimistic, making the transition seem a little easier than it truly is. What struck me most was watching people on screen repeatedly arrive at the brink of tears. That emotional response is real, rational, and entirely to be expected. We shouldn't suppress it. We need to process it, accept it, and work with it. Awareness without acceptance goes nowhere.

But awareness and acceptance are only the beginning. The other thing this evening made clear is that we can't wait until we feel fully informed before we act. We need to act and learn simultaneously. Here in Norfolk, we're actually better placed than most: living in a semi-rural county, many of us have gardens or allotments, and with fertilizer supply chains through the Strait of Hormuz now severely disrupted and a super El Niño brewing on top of everything else, building local food resilience isn't just sensible, it's urgent. And perhaps most importantly, an evening like this reminds us we are not facing this predicament alone.
