After I finished this I thought, wouldn't it be good to compare Hardy's Tess of D'urbervilles with Gaskell's Ruth? I think Hardy is the better writer (I don't think it is Gaskell's strongest novel) but I actually like Ruth a lot more than Tess and I think Gaskell was telling a harder story to write. Mostly because I think Hardy sees Tess as a victim, while Gaskell gives Ruth more agency and more strength to cope with her very confining circumstances.
