Check out this beautiful spot! It was the perfect place to test out the new DJI update with 50 mbps mode. My impressions and build details below...
Note:
It looks better in the goggles than on YouTube because a bit of detail is lost every time the video is re-compressed. Unfortunately, this video was compressed by the digital FPV system, then compressed by the DVR in the goggles, then compressed by YouTube. Watch it in 4K 60fps mode if you want to see as much detail as possible (closest approximation of what's in the goggles).
My Initial Impressions:
It's great to see DJI continue to support their product. This is a pretty nice upgrade too! When you enable 50 mbps bit rate, it uses more than one channel at once in order to transmit twice as much image data! That results in a clearer image especially when there are a lot of fast moving details. You won't notice as much of a difference when the drone is stationary because even a low bitrate can resolve a stationary image. The video compression takes advantage of the similarity between frames, so there is little data to send if nothing is changing, but a lot of data to send if the whole image contains fine details that are in motion. Personally, I noticed the biggest difference on the sides of the image because I keep Focus Mode turned on. At 25 mbps the sides of the image would start to get blotchy if there was any movement, but at 50 mbps the side definitely preserved more detail. It's not a night-and-day difference, but it's still pretty nice to get a free upgrade simply by updating the firmware! Thanks DJI! So what's the downside? Enabling 50 mbps mode uses more of the frequency band for each FPV channel. In 25 mbps mode there are 8 channels, but in 50 mbps mode there are only 3 channels. That's not a problem if you fly by yourself, but it may not be usable in group settings. I don't think it will be a big problem for me because I don't plan to race with DJI FPV.
