Join CNAS on Tuesday, September 15, from 12:00–1:00 p.m. for a timely discussion of the current state of the U.S. veteran population and the network of organizations serving this community.
America’s 17.3 million veterans represent a population in flux, as veterans from the post-9/11 wars represent a larger proportion of the community and veterans of older conflicts pass away. Serving that population is a nonprofit sector working alongside federal programs, filling gaps the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies can’t reach alone with housing, mental health care, employment support, legal aid, and case navigation.
As the nation asks much of those who serve and have served, a clear understanding of the organizational landscape providing enduring, professional support to this community is essential. Traditional analyses of the veteran-serving nonprofit sector evaluate capacity through the lens of organizations’ financial health. In an upcoming Center for a New American Security (CNAS) report, Redrawing the Map: Assessing the Military- and Veteran-Serving Nonprofit Sector, author Katherine Kuzminski provides an analysis of the nearly 1,000 organizations that maintain full-time staff dedicated to driving positive outcomes for the nation’s veterans.
