A Red Warning weather event has caused chaos and death in New Zealand
Several people, including children, are thought missing after a massive landslide destroyed parts of the iconic Mount Maunganui campground about 9.30am today.
People were heard screaming for help from inside a toilet block as would-be rescuers on the roof desperately tried to use tools to get through. The voices went quiet after about 15 minutes.
One of those feared trapped was a woman trying to warn others of the danger.
Witnesses in Mount Maunganui have described violent shaking as the hillside collapsed.
Two people are dead after a slip hit a house in the nearby Pāpāmoa. Two people were able to escape.
North of Auckland, the search has been called off for a local man in 40s who went missing in raging floods while trying to cross the Mahurangi River.
He has been identified as a migrant worker from Kiribati, and his wife says she's hopeful he will survive.
In Tairāwhiti, seven people had to be rescued after they were trapped overnight on a roof.
States of Emergency remain in place for Northland, Coromandel, Tairāwhiti, Bay of Plenty and Hauraki.
