Severe winds of about 150 kph are occurring through the Canterbury foothills, trees buildings and signs damaged, the TranzAlpine passenger train is cancelled, railways are being checked for damage.

A gust of 224kms was measured at Mt Hutt Skifield before the measuring station failed.
