Red-Necked Grebe
Highly adapted to an aquatic lifestyle. Their legs are positioned at the rear of their body, which is ideal for propelling themselves through the water with their feet.
The placement of their legs far back on the body allows them to use their feet in a powerful, sculling motion for swimming and diving, similar to how a duck propels itself.
Red-necked Grebes, like other grebes, consume their own feathers and feed them to their young. This behavior is thought to protect the stomach and intestines from injury by ingested prey, like fish bones.
While some coastal migration occurs during the day, Red-necked Grebes primarily migrate over land at night, either alone or in small, loosely associated groups.
Due to the placement of their legs far back on their bodies, Red-necked Grebes are quite clumsy on land, essentially shuffling forward on their breasts.
Grebes also have lobed toes, which are like paddles, further enhancing their propulsion in the water.
They are excellent divers and swimmers, using their lobed toes for propulsion and legs for steering underwater. They can dive to depths of 25-30 feet in search of food and remain underwater for an average of 30 seconds.
While primarily consuming fish in the winter, their diet expands to include a wide variety of aquatic insects, crustaceans, amphibians, and even some plant matter during the breeding season.
They are one of the most vocal grebes during the breeding season, but are largely silent the rest of the year.
