As one of the people who has to speak to loved ones after a incident inolving a Recovery Operator, I am enthralled we have finally won this battle that was the right to use Red Lights. My thanks go out to all those who over the last forty plus years, have pushed for specialist warning lights for Vehicle Recovery Operators. This includes AVRO, CSRRR, IVR. Professional Recovery Magazine, Recovery Link, PROF and numerous individuals. Sadly, many of them have not lived long enough to see their hard work come to fruition.
Going forward however we have to make sure that this hard-won victory is not squandered by mismanagement! Of course we want it now, but it MUST NOT be introduced until its use is fully understood by all. It must be restricted to the right trained people and used like any other ‘privilege’ that can be taken away if misused. Vehicle must automatically switch the lights off when they move away and they must never be on when moving. They must never become like Amber Lights switched on with little, or no thought.
