A scientific survey of the critically endangered red handfish by the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).
The first half of the video shows a few different red handfish individuals from a population east of Hobart, and the second half shows observations being recorded for each fish (images, size, GPS location, habitat composition). The data may be used to decide how to conserve red handfish.
All handfish use their fins as feet. As can be seen in the video, they sit on the bottom and are very reluctant to move anywhere. Although that makes it easy to take measurements, it also makes them very vulnerable to predation and poaching.
