Culture awareness is very important for any background, IF you care about being a kind, friendly ally to all people, and just a good human in general.
If you try to be responsible for educating yourself on other cultures, ethnicities, and beliefs, YOU rock! 🙌🏽
Some RED FLAGS to watch out for if your intention is to be a respectful Indigenous ally:
1 - Sometimes, asking us WHY we don’t speak our Indigenous language can be TRIGGERING. 😭
Why? - Because for decades, it was ILLEGAL for us to speak our native language - or practise any cultural traditions, so over the years the languages in Canada have been lost - and some Indigenous people were even raised to FEAR their own language - as they’d get punished for speaking it….
2 - Saying that First Nations people getting tax exemption is also a huge red flag for cultural sensitivity…
The government of Canada mandated Indian Status cards as a means of tracking us, and controlling our human rights with whether we have an issued card or not.
3 - Telling an Indigenous person that they don’t look Indigenous… (😑deep breath) - red flag people!
The worst thing about this one… is that too frequently, I see that it is Indigenous people themselves who are telling their own native brothers and sisters that they don’t look like a real Indigenous person 🤭
I encourage all of you (including myself) to be kind to yourself, each other, and not judge based on what you think at first glance. Lead with love, respect, and the seven grandfather teachings 💛❤️🖤🤍
