Reclaimed Wormwood Floating Shelves
Watch me build a set of shelves for Creatura House's beautiful new shop in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. I'm very happy to work with this new space that both supports artist's and wildlife conservation.

-Reclaimed Wormwood Floating Shelves -- Woodworking-
The wood that I'm using for this project is known as Wormwood, or Clamwood. It's reclaimed from the piers here in the Pacific Northwest. As the wood sits in the water, clams attach themselves to the wood, and bore holes into the timber. They make these amazing patterns when you split the board in two.
A majority of the project is getting the wood to the right size, sanding, and cleaning. Once that process was done, I built a jig using my drill press to make nice straight holes to follow. I used the jig and a long boy bit to bore out 8" deep holes. I then used a router to create a recess for the hardware.
The hardware was custom ordered from a welder friend of mine. I will in the future weld up my own plates, but that shop isn't set up yet.
For the finish, I used 4 coats of Waterlox on these boards, and let them dry 24hrs between coats.
When it came to installation. I made sure the brackets were screwed into studs, so they could hold plenty of weight. The shelves fit over an 8" long by 1/2" diameter steel rod, and is a pressure fit.
