I really appreciated this book - great survey of the history of Central Asia and the Middle East. Perfect as a jumping off point for deeper reading about specific areas, peoples, times that grabbed my interest.
Because I got interested in the Sogdians mentioned in the book, heres an interesting article from the Smithsonian about them:
