Books mentioned in this video:
Unsheltered, Barbara Kingsolver
Heavy: An American Memoir, Kiese Laymon
West, Carys Davies
The Wreath: Kristin Lavransdatter #1, Sigrid Undset
The Vagrants, Yiyun Li
Dear Friend, From My Life I Write to You in Your Life, Yiyun Li
Where Reasons End, Yiyun Li
My goodreads review of Dear Friend: The opaque essays that comprise this memoir about the author's depression are conversations between the author and books from a few writers she re-reads endlessly, between the author and a living writer she befriends (William Trevor), between the author and English (and her rejection of her first language, Chinese (I'm not sure if it was Mandarin or another), between herself and the cruelty of her parents, neighbors, and government, and, finally, between the author and her younger self. The essays aren't exactly linear chronologically, nor are they intended to be clear.
