Ms. Birchmier's dissertation explores the relationship between Black Liberation Movement organizations and the Labor Movement. Her project is a marekebisho, Kiswahili for corrective. Birchmier excavates the roots and the sustaining force of the Ferguson Uprising among a cohort of young Black, mostly women, labor activists organizing for the Fight for $15. By recovering the central role of Black labor activists her corrective history challenges the petty bourgeois narrative that centers Black Lives Matter organization.
