I love building large pieces of terrain, but the storage options once you have something bigger than a foot across become limiting. I made this Medieval Cloister, perfect for Mordheim, DnD and Warhammer 40K as well. This is a set of modular ruins that come together to form a very detailed structure. This is the kind of building you would find attached to a medieval cathedral.
This build video features XPS Foam detailing, Flocking, hot glue and popsicle stick crafting! I also go over the very simple paint scheme involving dry brushing, washes and how to add quick texture to the ground level to get realistic looking rubble.
I’m exploring a new (for me) method of quickly prototyping and modeling complex structures, then producing them with a CNC Machine.
This build was largely made possible by my father, who has built his own DIY CNC machine complete with dust extraction and a safety enclosure. He’s offered to let me use it on several occasions in the past year and I finally took him up on the offer!
The kinds of curves and arches needed to pull a structure like this off would have taken ages to carve out by hand, and the use of plywood/mdf makes the skeleton of this building much stronger.
